Last night, as Kori walked us through the analogy of the physical body representing the various members of the spiritual body and their spiritual gifts, I was most struck by Christ's role. He is the mind of the body. All of the gifts that have been generously bestowed upon us have come from Christ's hand and are to be used for his purpose, so it seems logical that we would follow his direction for their use. This seems to be a basic principle, but often the direction of a church or ministry veers from the God's plan and follows the path the pastor or leader paves. A teacher is to be speaking what the mind commands, and nothing else. The mouth is not the mind! When a leader is gathering a group for service, he or she has the responsibility of seeking God's will rather than acting on individual inspiration. When we become Christians, we submit to Christ. Why then do so many trust their own abilities before seeking the counsel of an omniscient God? It begins to make more sense now why a hierarchy of spiritual gifts forms. If we allow ourselves to believe that our job is to follow the mouth, then in our hearts we have diminished the authority of Christ. When we do so, we no longer view our gifts in the way he does, but we begin to compare our gifts to those in leadership positions who we now see as the head of operations. Then, the desire is to impress those at the top of the system and we begin to fit our unique gifts into the mold mere man has cast. At this point, a gift that is powered through Christ becomes a trait dedicated to man. If you choose to use your gift in such a way, it will not bear the rich harvest we all desire. Christ is the mind and he is the only one who can direct you to fertile soil.

This is an interesting point. There is a delicate balance between submitting to Christ and submitting to Him through the leadership He has placed over us. I think the balance is maintained when we remember that the human head or leader placed over us is placed there by God and thus chosen, gifted, and empowered by Him to lead us and also remembering that he or she is still human, not God. The sheep need to be lead. This is easily seen when you look at a flock of people who have no leader. They just seem to remain idle or scatter into wrong directions. Yet, when a champion or leader is put in their life and points them in the right direction, amazing growth takes place. However, this becomes dangerous when the sheep forget that the leader is not God and allows the human leader's voice to become the singular voice they hear. If the sheep are abiding in Christ, then they can follow the human leader with joy as Christ's voice resonates through the human leader. Yet, when the two voices are sounding somewhat different, the sheep knows to stop, pray, and discuss it with their human leader before proceeding forward.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all the blogging! I am particularly excited about this topic on spiritual gifts because I see it actively working in the Young Life ministry I recently became a part of. When I joined this semester there was a definate leader who took on all tasks, no roles recognized for anyone other than him. This past week I talked to him about the team and everyones roles in it. I also told him how I was seeing this all in a fresh perspective as I was studying spititual gifts. Our body will not function to its fullest potential unless we are actively using the gifts God gave us in the roles He designed and called us to fill. God moved through that conversation and this week he has delegated tasks to other team members, recognizing their gifts and giving them a chance to exercise them. He is our 'leader' of our team, but ultimately CHRIST has LED us to a place where we can mature as a mini body at Houston Christian YL. PRAISE GOD FOR MOVEMENT AND GROWTH!
ReplyDeleteI will miss all the ladies tonight while I'm at the Rodeo seeing Rascal Flats!
I'm talking at Young Life Wed, so pray for me ladies! It's about our relationship with God and the "myths" we have about it.
We are at the gathering! Yay!
